Getting the Moody Blues

Inspired by nature, rich Navy blues and soft Stormy blues are red-hot for interiors this Winter. Jayne Morgan – Lead Designer and owner of The Finishing Touches, explores these moody hues.

“Though Navy and ‘Stormy’ blues are trending, they’re actually timeless choices and not just for paint and wallpaper. They’re also a simple way to bring blue into a home, through artwork and soft furnishings,” says Jayne.

WINTER HUES OF BLUE

Whether you’re decorating for potential buyers or yourself, using a palette of moody blues gives you the scope to create dramatic, bold spaces or a soothing Winter oasis.

Rich Navy blues

Navy blue can come in a variety of shades, tones and tints: from brighter, highly saturated, jewel-like blues, through to deeply pigmented, inky blues.

Like Stormy blues, Navy is beautifully complemented by earthy colours such as nutmeg, cinnamon and cumin, which make dark Navy blues seem even deeper. Or Navy and grey is an elegant, understated and classic combination.

Stormy Blues Ahead

Versatile Stormy blues are medium-toned, hazy blues with grey/green undertones.

“These blues can be used as dark neutrals and despite being called Stormy blues, they help create calming environments,” Jayne explains. “This also makes them a very good choice for Winter décor.”

Stormy Blues suit a variety of home styles – such as Hampton, Classic, and especially Coastal, as the tones pair well with off-whites and wood, for a seaside feel.

Sophisticated Soft Furnishings

There are beautiful blue designer prints and patterns coming through this Winter, especially in Bedding. “For example, blue florals which work well in a Master Bedroom, to blend feminine and masculine tastes. I’m also loving plush, tactile blue velvets for luxurious, eye-catching chairs and sofas,” enthuses Jayne.
